Shaun Finley: The Man of Many Colors…
Most of the time while he is at the course, he is not too hard to pick out of the crowd. At times you may have to ask yourself if that was Ian Poulter or Darren Clarke walking by you. There is no question there are not too many golfers with that same flare for style walking around.
“I enjoy having fun while here at the course. It’s nice to get away from the same old khaki pants and white polo shirt.” You may not find too many pairs of khaki pants in Finley’s closest, but what you will find is a wide range of colors including pink, yellow, purple, and a variety of plaids that would bring back memories from the 70’s and early 80’s.
On the golf course Finley tries to let his game do the talking. “I can remember playing for the first time with my grandpa when I was 10 years old. I don’t know what it was, but I was immediately hooked.” Finley has enjoyed success at the junior and high school level and looks to continue that into his professional career. Even just being around the golf course is enjoyable for Finley. Most people when asked of Finley will say, “he is a golfer”, and that suits Finley just fine.
On the lesson tee Finley’s teaching style meets the needs of his students no matter their playing capabilities. From beginners to more advanced players Finley looks to improve his students one step at a time. “I believe that no matter your playing level, you can always improve. More often than not, it also helps to have someone there to help guide you on your way. It’s definitely fun to be around when something starts to click and when a student finally understands a concept we’ve been working on.”
Without question, Shaun definitely has a lot to offer on the lesson tee. There is no doubt that he can help improve your game, just let his knowledge of the game do the talking, not his choice of trousers. Contact him at shaunfinley@golftheoaks.com or at (608) 837-4774, ext. 4.

Ben Scott
I gained my love for the game at a young age while playing in the backyard with my older brother Nathan, who was always a formidable foe. Playing with a flagpole and a cup from the local golf course gave us the opportunity to create our own golf course in the yard. Unfortunately, our parents didn’t realize that their course architects were using the house as a turning point for all doglegs. You could say we helped add a little texture to the outside of our childhood home.
As we grew a little older, it was time for my dad to test our abilities on an actual golf course. We learned to play the game largely from each other and a few junior instructors along the way. I was hooked. My mom was always involved as the taxi driver for all junior tournaments that I was fortunate enough to find some success playing in. Both parents would eventually turn into cheerleaders as I competed at the High School level along side my old childhood adversary. We were fortunate enough to win a State title together.
During the years of High School competition, I gained a respect for the maintenance of a golf course as I joined fellow golfer and best friend, Grant, to work in the “high budget” maintenance department of Lakeland Hills Golf Course in Lodi. We were also given the opportunity to help out with the junior golf program which would prove to be great experience later. Of course we would finish work just in time to get a quick 9-holes in before dinner. This practice would prove handy as I fueled my competitive juices during the summer months as I was able to win the club championship 2 years in a row at the ages of 16 and 17, defeating competition that was 2-20 years older.
Since the days of High School play, I have graduated college, gained a professional position at a great facility and enjoy teaching the game of golf to people of all ages. Hopefully, they will gain some of these same memories that I have, while experiencing some success. I look forward to hearing from you at, benscott@golftheoaks.com, or by calling the golf course at (608) 837-4774 x10.
